Privacy Policy
- We don't collect any personal data. Tablelight has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no servers of ours.
- What you create — your profile, characters, campaigns, photos and recordings — is stored on your own device.
- During a session, devices at your table talk directly to each other over your local network.
- The microphone is only used when the DM turns on a feature that needs it, and speech is turned into text on the device.
This policy explains how the Tablelight app for iPhone and iPad ("Tablelight", "we", "us") handles information. If you have a question about it, contact us at hello@tablelight.app.
Information we collect
None. Tablelight doesn't send anything about you or your games to us or to anyone acting for us. We don't use analytics or crash-reporting services, advertising networks or tracking of any kind, and Tablelight doesn't ask you to create an account.
What Tablelight keeps on your device
So the app can work, it stores the following on the device you're using:
- Your profile: the name you play under, your dice look and your settings.
- Characters: names, stats and any portrait you add.
- Campaigns (on the DM's device): the players, scenes, secret notes you've sent and the campaign's chronicle.
- Keepsakes: photos of handouts you choose to keep.
- Moments and chapters: audio clips and transcripts of moments someone chose to keep, and chapters written by the session scribe.
You can delete campaigns and keepsakes in the app, and deleting the app removes all of it. Like other app data, it may be included in your device's backups (for example iCloud Backup), which are controlled by your Apple settings and Apple's privacy policy.
What's shared with your table
When you host or join a session, Tablelight connects the devices at your table directly, using Apple's Multipeer Connectivity over Wi-Fi, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Connections are encrypted, and nothing passes through the internet or through us. Only the devices in your session receive:
- your name, character card and portrait, and your dice look;
- your rolls, and the scene settings the DM chooses;
- secret notes, which go only to the player they're addressed to;
- a chapter written by a player acting as scribe, which is sent to the DM.
To let players recognise their DM from one session to the next, the DM's device creates a private key that stays in its Keychain; only a fingerprint of it is shared with the table. Each player's device likewise keeps a private key so it can reclaim its seat.
Microphone and speech
Tablelight only uses the microphone when the DM turns on one of these features, and iOS shows the microphone indicator while it's in use:
- Ease the sound under your voice (storyteller mode): measures how loud the room is, moment to moment. No audio is recorded or kept.
- Keep moments: holds only the last few minutes of sound in memory on the DM's device, continuously replaced. Nothing is saved unless someone keeps a moment; then that clip, and a transcript of it, is saved in the campaign's chronicle on the DM's device.
- The session scribe: turns speech into text as you play, on the scribe's device, and uses it to write a chapter of the session. The audio isn't saved.
Speech recognition and chapter writing happen entirely on the device, using Apple's on-device speech recognition and Apple Intelligence's on-device model. Your voice and transcripts aren't sent to Apple, to us or to anyone else.
Camera and photos
Tablelight uses the camera or your photo library only when you choose to take or pick a picture — a character portrait or a handout keepsake. The photo picker gives the app only the pictures you select.
Shared maps
A DM can share a link to a map on another website, such as Owlbear Rodeo or Inkarnate. When you open it, Tablelight shows that website inside the app, and your device connects to it directly, as it would in a browser. That site's own privacy policy applies, and it may store cookies or sign-in details in the app's web storage on your device.
Purchases
In-app purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. We don't receive your payment details or Apple Account information; the app only checks with Apple which items you've bought.
Children
Tablelight isn't directed at children under 13, and because it collects no personal data, it doesn't knowingly collect data from children.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and similar laws you have rights over personal data held about you. Because we don't hold any, there's nothing for us to access, correct or delete on your behalf: everything Tablelight stores is on your devices, under your control. If you have a question or a concern, contact us at hello@tablelight.app. In the UK you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes to this policy
If we change how Tablelight handles information, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If a future feature needs to send data off your devices (for example optional cloud backup of campaigns), it will be opt-in, and we'll explain it here first.
